The Godfather
The Godfather was more than a little concerned when the boss (my wife) told me we would be attending a performance of Mamma Mia, Mandalay Bay's new production show. My friends had already given me the 411: "it's a chick show bro." Just great, two hours plus of ABBA music and swooning housewifes. Perfect. After seeing the show for the third time, though, the Godfather is here to tell you that Mamma Mia is one of the best production shows on the Strip.

This is not the first foray into Broadway entertainment for the highly creative Mandalay Bay folks. The theater was originally constructed to house "Chicago," an excellent spin off of the Broadway show and movie of the same name. The Mandalay Bay Theater is a plush, comfortable venue. Sure, concessions are steep, but that is to be expected from a first-rate facility. The show does start right on time, and if you miss the opening, you are asked to wait in the lobby for 10 minutes until an usher can escort you in. Morale of the story - be on time.

Without giving away too much of the story, Mamma Mia is about a mother, a daughter, three possible dads, and a trip down the aisle. The story is told using ABBA songs, acting, and plenty of dancing. The show concludes with a great finale, and leaves audiences with that "feel good" sensation.

If you weren't around for the 70's and 80's, ABBA was a Swedish group that absolutely dominated the airwaves from 1973 to 1983, racking up gold records and number one hits. Post ABBA, the group collaborated on Mamma Mia, with the theatrical production debuting in London during 1999. For more information on ABBA, check out www.abbasite.com.

Mamma Mia performances are:
  • Monday - 7:00 pm

  • Wednesday - 7:00 pm

  • Thursday - 7:00 pm

  • Friday - 8:00 pm

  • Saturday - 7:00 pm and 10:30 pm

  • Sunday - 5:00 pm and 9:00 pm

Tickets are $45, $65, and $85, and the show is scheduled to run indefinitely. For the best seats, be sure to purchase your tickets at least a month in advance.

For further information on Mamma Mia, check out the Mandalay Bay (www.mandalaybay.com) or Mamma Mia (www.mamma-mia.com) web sites. This is a great show for the entire family. Highly recommended by the Godfather!
